June 2019

Anne Pfleger, current Lima Area Chapter 374 Vice President, has recently been elected as the President-Elect of the National Association of Women In Construction.

Anne Pfleger, CIT has been working in the construction and transportation industries for 25 years. Currently working mainly in the estimating department for Charles Construction Services in Findlay, OH and outgoing Vice President of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), she strives to continually enhance women’s success in the construction industry.

Many would be content with serving local communities through NAWIC chapter events and helping their chapter progress forward. For Anne it ignited an internal purpose and passion, to not only improve personally, but to support and guide other women in the construction industry to do the same.

In addition, Anne volunteers countless hours reaching out to potential members and employers encouraging them to support women in construction. She has engaged parallel organizations seeking ways to be of mutual benefit to one another. Anne also partakes in Habitat for Humanity and Open Arms Domestic Violence Shelter activities, all while working both full and part time jobs, earning her bachelor’s degree in Business Management, and raising a son who is now a Marine.

Her aspirations and belief in NAWIC’s mission have carried her from a chapter member in 2006 to now National President-Elect as an inspiring voice for all women in the industry. She embraces NAWIC values by living them daily, and in doing so, empowers, elevates and challenges others to do the same.

Lima Chapter Visits ONU College of Engineering, Meets Students and Learn About its Annual Concrete Canoe Project

Members of the Lima NAWIC Chapter were afforded the opportunity to tour the Ohio Northern University College of Engineering and learn about its incredible concrete canoe project.  Project team members also provided a tour of the concrete lab where the special floating vessel was being constructed. Each year, the college's engineering students hand-craft a "concrete canoe" that competes annually in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) regional concrete canoe contest. The competition provides students with a practical application of the engineering principles they learn in the classroom, along with important team and project management skills they will need in their careers. The event challenges the students' knowledge, creativity and stamina, while showcasing the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material. For the past five years, the team has qualified for the National competition. Photos from the tour are provided below.

Lima NAWIC is Looking for Judges and Donations for our Upcoming Block Kids Building Competition

Picture
On Saturday, October 26th, the Lima Ohio Area NAWIC chapter (a local women in construction group) will host its 7th Annual Block Kids Building Competition. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Lima Girl Scouts camp on Robb Avenue in Lima. We are looking for financial donations to help support this fun event, as well as individuals to volunteer approximately 90 minutes of their time to be a judge.

The purpose of this program is to introduce children to the construction industry, create awareness, and promote interest in future careers in one of the many facets of the industry. The competition requires participants to independently design and create a structure with interlocking Lego® blocks and three of the following optional materials: A rock, a 12” piece of string, an 18” square foil, or an 18” x 18” piece of poster board.

This year the competition will be open to 40 area girl scouts participants. The overall winner may compete for the regional and national competitions. This competition is designed to open student’s eyes to the possibilities and opportunities available in the construction arena.  During our event, many children hear for the first time about different areas of construction or ways they can be involved from office work, to field workers, architects and planners, managers, suppliers and more. This is just one way we can open their minds to the endless possibilities of a career in construction. Fun events such as this encourage the interest of future generation construction workers!

WE NEED YOUR HELP… In an effort to involve the employers of the membership, construction-related businesses and the community at large, we are actively seeking donations to help fund this community event and others like it to promote the construction industry. If you are considering wrapping up your year with a donation to a great cause, THIS IS definitely the one! We are asking for any contribution, whether it is monetary, volunteering to help out the day of the event, or goodie bag stuffers, it is greatly appreciated! Your kind contribution will allow us to impact the lives of at least 40 area students in one day and actively promote women in construction for months to come.

Please click HERE for a copy of the sponsorship form, complete, then return by fax or mail to Lima NAWIC Chapter 374, c/o Wendy Baxter of Tuttle Services at 880 Shawnee Road, Lima, Ohio 45805, by Friday, October 4th, 2013.   If making a monetary contribution, please make your check payable to: Lima Ohio Area NAWIC Chapter 374.  If you are able to offer prizes or volunteer time, please indicate that on the attached form as well. Once again, thank you so much for your interest and your consideration. We hope to hear from you!

Volunteers are needed for those interested in judging this competition! Please contact Wendy Baxter at 419-998-4820 ASAP if you are interested in being a judge.

Advertise with us!

Recently, our chapter has added a new policy to allow non-member construction-related companies to advertise their job postings/opportunities (up to 5) on our website for a fee of $25 per month. See our “Job Opportunities” page on this site. Being the only female member construction-related organization in west central Ohio, we continually receive a lot of hits/views!

If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact Wendy Baxter at ww.baxter@gmail.com and your information will be posted immediately once payment is received.

Even better, advertise for FREE....  If you have any female employees that would be interested in joining our local chapter, your company would also benefit by having a ‘free’ ad (with a link to your website) and unlimited job postings on our site.

Why Do We Celebrate WIC Week?

Picture
Every first full week in March, NAWIC members work hard to celebrate WIC Week. The ways in which they celebrate are very different, but they all have one thing in common – sharing and spreading the word about women who work in the construction industry. Some examples of chapter's WIC Week activities include: helping their communities fill food pantry shelves and serving hot meals, hosting seminars and networking activities to educate and connect women who work in the industry, host joint sessions with other trade associations, speak at local schools about the construction industry, issue press releases about their events, record radio and TV spots to inform the community about our association and activities, job site tours, membership team building activities, obtaining a proclamation from the Mayor of the chapter's community, hold a fundraiser, work on a habitat project, and the list goes on and on! All these activities not only keep our current members interested and invested in the association, but they attract new members who want to join our efforts and share in the fun.

The Lima Area Chapter's biggest WIC Week event was the "Bowling for Safety City" fundraiser that was held on March 5th. The event was held in partnership with the Lima Building Trades and the Lima Noon Optimists. We are proud to announce that the event was quite a success, raising $2,100 in proceeds, which will all be donated to Lima Safety City rebuilding efforts. In all, 60 bowlers participated in the fundraiser.

A special "Thank You" goes out to all of the participants, all six corporate sponsors, the raffle prize donors, and all of the Lima NAWIC Chapter members, especially our event chairperson, Kim Neeley of Smith-Boughan, for their efforts in making this event such a fun and successful fundraiser (despite the bad weather).

 Our Event Sponsors included:

  • Atlas Restoration
  • Boilermakers Local #85
